The faculty and students at Meek Elementary School in Northeast Portland will dedicate a bench in memory of Melissa Bittler, the neighborhood teenager who was sexually assaulted and killed last December.
The dedication ceremony will take place in the schools garden from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 19 on what would have been Bittlers 15th birthday. The school is at 4039 N.E. Alberta Court.
Bittler and her older sister, Teresa, 16, attended the school, and their mother, Mary, headed the booster club.
We just felt we wanted to do something for her, said Cathy Rossman, who taught Melissa Bittler in kindergarten. Rossman said students raised more than $1,000 for the bench.
Other money they raised will go to the girls soccer team, the Rose City Wings.
Ladon Stephens, 33, was indicted and pleaded not guilty to various charges stemming from Bittlers attack and slaying.
