Posts: 2483 11/24/02 9:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Denver, CO -- On the evening of July 3, 1999, Jeremy Thalley, 16, and his brother William, 19, were shot during a drive-by shooting that started at Federal Boulevard and 38th Avenue and continued to Cedar Avenue. The Thalleys were passengers in a car heading south on Federal when a Chevy S-10 "low rider" pickup truck drove up. The two suspects in the pickup verbally challenged the victims, pulled out a .38 caliber automatic pistol, and fired into the car. Jeremy, who was sitting in the back seat of the car, died from his wounds. There have been no arrests. http://www.littlestangels.net/Stories312.html

Contents: The Death Toll Since Columbine: 556 Victims of Gun Violence in 44 Cities Gun Violence Deaths in Survey Cities April 20 September 1, 1999 Circumstances Surrounding Certain Gun Violence Deaths in Survey Cities Survey Cities Reporting Deaths Due to Gun Violence April 20 - September 1, 1999 THE DEATH TOLL SINCE COLUMBINE: 556 VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE IN 44 CITIES On April 20, in an event that shocked the nation and drew world attention once again to gun violence in America, two high school students at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado, armed with automatic weapons and shotguns, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 others before turning their guns on themselves. Many observers in public life, in the media, in homes throughout the nation felt that this was a defining moment, an incident that finally would prompt the Congress to act on the free flow of deadly weapons in American society. But this has not happened. Congress has not acted, and in cities throughout the nation, the gun violence death toll continues to rise. This is a report on the experience of just 44 U.S. cities in which 556 persons have died as a result of gun violence since April 20. It is a report on the actual fatalities produced by this gun violence, based on the cities' responses to a late-August request for information by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. For these cities, it lists, by date, between April 20 and September 1, the name and age of each victim (except where police department policy does not permit the release of this information, or where the victim could not be identified.) The report also includes brief descriptions of the circumstances surrounding a number of these shootings. Readers of the report will note that on only two days during this period April 24 and August 26 no firearms deaths occurred in any of the 44 cities. They also will note that 61 of these gunshot fatalities were 18 years of age and under. The youngest victim was just three, the oldest was 84. Where possible, the city officials indicated whether the fatal shootings were accidental and whether they were the result of a criminal or violent act. In their responses to the Conference's survey, seven of the deaths were identified as accidental; 320 were identified as resulting from criminal or violent acts. While the listing includes suicides, it does not include those deaths in which the city indicated the individual killed was responsible for the act that is, killed in the commission of a crime. The 44 cities covered in the report range in size from Detroit, which has a population just over one million, to Superior, Wisconsin, with a population of 27,500. An additional 24 cities responding to the Conference's request for information on gun violence fatalities since April 20 reported that none had occurred. Conference Policy and Action on Gun Violence This report makes it clear that, while Columbine may have been the event that moved a nation to say, "this has got to stop," the fact is, it has not stopped. There have been highly-visible incidents since Columbine: the high school shootings in Conyers, Georgia; the racist rampage in Illinois and Indiana; the killings by the day trader in Atlanta; the killings of co-workers in Pelham, Alabama; and, most recently, the shootings at a Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles. And there has been the day-to-day carnage in cities the gun deaths that do not usually appear in the national news. For more than 30 years the Conference of Mayors has actively supported comprehensive efforts to reduce gun violence and the illegal trafficking of weapons. Most recently it proclaimed September 9, 1999 "Gun Safety Day," a day designed to focus attention on the importance of keeping guns away from kids and criminals. The Conference's efforts on Gun Safety Day are being led by its President, Mayor Wellington E. Webb of Denver, and by his Gun Violence Task Force Chairs, Mayors Joseph P. Ganim of Bridgeport and Clarence Harmon of St. Louis. In support of meaningful gun safety reforms, the Conference is continuing its long partnership with the nation's police chiefs, including the Major Cities Chiefs under the leadership of Salt Lake City Chief Ruben B. Ortega. The mayors are pleased that Gun Safety Day also is being supported by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Long before the Columbine tragedy occurred, the mayors identified the issue of school violence and the need for constructive after-school opportunities as a top priority. Under the leadership of its immediate past President, Mayor Deedee Corradini of Salt Lake City, and its School Violence Task Force Chair, Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton of Minneapolis, the Conference developed A National Action Plan on School Violence and Kids from 2:00 to 8:00 PM. That plan, presented to President Clinton and the Congress in October 1998, included a strong call for Congressional action on gun safety. These mayors, many others within the Conference, and the nation's police chiefs continue to provide leadership on this top national priority. A Call for Action on Gun Safety Day The Conference of Mayors is publishing this report as mayors and police chiefs from cities across the nation take their message to the White House and Capitol Hill on Gun Safety Day. This message is simple and clear: It is time for Congress to do its part in protecting America's children and making cities safer for all residents. The mayors and police chiefs who continue to work toward the elimination of gun violence in their communities know they cannot succeed with local resources alone. Congress must act, and it must act now. The Senate has passed gun safety measures that would close existing legal loopholes and offer greater protections for children. The House must accept these measures in its conference with the Senate, and Congress must send strong gun safety legislation to the President right away. This is what mayors and police chiefs know is needed. It is what the American people want, and what they deserve to receive from their elected representatives in Washington. Daly City, CA: On the morning of June 2, Edwin Pagaduan and Cecilia Pagaduan were the victims of murder; they died of gunshot wounds from a .25 caliber weapon at their residence at 444 Higate Drive. Their son and daughter reported discovering their parents' bodies when they arrived home from school. The investigation revealed that the victims' 18-year-old son, Joseph Pagaduan, had committed the murders because of an argument with his parents over school grades. Fontana, CA: While out on and bail and on trial for the attempted murder of his wife in Southgate, CA, the suspect forced entry into his father-in-law's Fontana residence and was confronted by his father-in-law inside the residence. The suspect shot the victim twice, killing him instantly. The father-in-law had testified at the suspect's trial earlier in the day. San Bernardino, CA: The victim was with two of his friends. They drove to an apartment complex where one of the victim's ex-girlfriends lived. As the vehicle stopped in the driveway, the girl's current boyfriend (suspect) shot at them with an assault rifle. All three were wounded, and the victim died at the scene. Denver, CO: On the evening of July 3, Jeremy Thalley, 16, and his brother William, 19, were shot during a drive-by shooting that started at Federal Boulevard and 38th Avenue and continued to Cedar Avenue. The Thalleys were passengers in a car heading south on Federal when a Chevy S-10 "low rider" pickup truck drove up. The two suspects in the pickup verbally challenged the victims, pulled out a .38 caliber automatic pistol, and fired into the car. Jeremy, who was sitting in the back seat of the car, died from his wounds. Bridgeport, CT: On the evening of August 17, police received a report of shots fired and a party down in the vicinity of Pembroke and Ogden Streets. When they arrived they discovered the victim lying in the roadway near the curb in front of 1246 Pembroke Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, legs and arms. The victim was transported to Bridgeport Hospital by medics, where he was pronounced dead. Numerous spent casings were recovered at the scene. Washington, DC: On the evening of June 21, Ms. Helen Foster-El, a 55-year-old grandmother, was outside her home in the 100 block of 56th Place, Southeast, watching neighborhood children play. Gunfire erupted between two groups of individuals. Upon hearing the gunfire, Ms. Foster-El began to shepherd the children into one of the neighborhood homes for their safety. As she was doing so she was struck in the back by a stray bullet and died instantly. Cape Coral, FL: All of the City's three deaths were determined to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head as acts of suicide. Motives range from being despondent over health to marital/relationship problems. All three victims were believed to be the owners of the handguns. Hollywood, FL: Mae Williams and her son Brandon were shot and killed in a murder-suicide that was related to domestic problems. Lennox Williams, husband of Mae and father of Brandon, shot them to death for reasons unknown before turning the gun on himself. Gainesville, FL: Davattah Brown, a single mother of three teenagers, was discovered dead in her vehicle at a northwest Gainesville apartment complex parking lot. A medical examination of the badly decomposed body revealed that Ms. Brown had been shot at close range with a small caliber handgun and left at the scene by an unknown suspect or suspects. Miami-Dade County, FL: A 25-year-old male was going door to door at an apartment building in Opa Locka, attempting to get children to go to clinics, dentists' and ophthalmologists' offices as part of his employment with "A Place Called Hope" Church. He came into contact with two unknown subjects and a struggle occurred. One of the subjects produced a firearm. The victim, who struggled with the subject over the firearm and was shot in the left chest, expired at the scene. Atlanta, GA: The two young Hollinger children were playing outside their residence. Charles found a loaded .380 caliber pistol in an empty television box in the breeze-way of the building, pointed the pistol at his brother, and pulled the trigger. The weapon discharged and struck Roshon in the face, killing him. Roshon was pronounced dead at the scene. The weapon was recovered from the same box in which Charles found it; he had returned it to the box after the shooting. Macon, GA: The victim was in the process of buying a gun on the street from an unknown suspect. The victim gave his money to the suspect, but instead of the suspect giving him the gun, the suspect shot him in the foot, leg and stomach. Following the shooting, the suspect fled. Fort Wayne, IN: Both Richard Rogers and Sidney Wilson were found dead from gunshot wounds in a Smith Street home. The juvenile victims were believed to be visiting the Smith Street address at the time of their deaths. It is unclear whether they were the innocent victims of someone else's drug deal gone bad, or were themselves participating in illegal activity. Gary, IN: On June 30, Blake King, widely regarded in the community as "a fine young man," was shot and killed after having argued with a friend. While Blake and his friend appeared to be settling their differences in a civilized manner, their argument became physical, with pushing and shoving. After the fight and the argument appeared to be over, Blake's friend went home, retrieved a handgun, returned to the scene, and shot Blake in the head. Rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead approximately one hour later. The victim, who was the nephew of Mayor Scott King, had turned 17 four days prior to the shooting. Louisville, KY: On August 8, 14-year-old Preston Posey was shot and killed while visiting the home of a 12-year-old friend. The weapon used in the shooting was a .357 magnum revolver. The 12-year-old boy, who subsequently was charged with murder, knew where the weapon was kept in the home and how it functioned. The boy's father, who allegedly owned the gun, was charged with the violation of a local ordinance requiring that handguns be secured in a locked box and with violation of a state law prohibiting the ownership/possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Owensboro, KY: On August 3, at approximately 1:00 AM, Korey Damyko Bridges was shot four times with a .25 caliber handgun and died at the scene. The perpetrator, age 18, was an acquaintance who admitted shooting the victim because he had stolen some money from him the previous night. Boston, MA: On April 30, 19-year-old Steven Clinton was shot in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston following an argument over a game of dice. The argument erupted after the suspect in the shooting apparently accused Mr. Clinton of cheating. Three days later, Steven Clinton succumbed to his wounds. Holyoke, MA: On July 12, Erica Reyes was shot by her boyfriend during a domestic dispute. The boyfriend, Victor Gonzalez, then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life as well. Ms. Reyes was the mother of an infant who was in the apartment at the time. Detroit, MI: On the afternoon of May 26, Delmar Guyton, a 23-year-old male, was shot to death on the corner of Shepherd and Agnes. An investigation revealed that Mr. Guyton was on his way to a friend's house when he was approached by Joenathan Johnson, an 18-year-old male, and Erdist Houser, a 20-year-old male. Following an exchange of words with Guyton, Houser produced a .25 caliber automatic pistol and fired several shots, mortally wounding Guyton. Houser and Johnson then ran from the scene. Johnson was arrested a short time later; Houser remains a fugitive. Warrants were issued charging Johnson and Houser with first degree murder. Houser was also charged with possession of a firearm while committing a felony. There had been no known previous contact between the shooter and the victim and, except for the exchange of words, no other motive for the shooting was established. Lansing, MI: Dennis Tyler and Bryan Gilmore were shot at an outdoor summer party attended by approximately 75 others. The shooter, who was behind Tyler and Gilmore when he fired at them, ran from the scene. Witnesses have refused to cooperate with the investigation, and no arrest has been made. St. Louis, MO: On the evening of August 6, homicide detectives were called to Page and Goodfellow to respond to a shooting. The investigation revealed that the victim, Damon Hammond, 23, was in a vehicle southbound on Goodfellow at Page. Another vehicle pulled alongside; the passenger exited and fired numerous shots from a handgun at the victim. The victim drove to his father's house at 6069 Cates, and the police were called. The doctor at Barnes Hospital, where Hammond had been taken, reported puncture wounds to the right chest, right arm, abdomen, right leg and right back. He was sent to surgery in critical condition, with death imminent. Newark, NJ: The victim was shot in the head by an individual with whom he had argued. This individual left the scene following the argument, returned with a gun, shot the victim, and later shot himself. Akron, OH: Daron D. Mitchell, 18 years old, was scheduled to graduate from high school June 1 and then report to the Paris Island Marine Base to follow in his brothers' footsteps as a United States Marine. On May 31, he was at home on his porch with a friend when Tyrone Williams, a former boyfriend of his mother, approached. Daron's mother had broken off the relationship with Williams, and Daron told Williams that he could not go into the house, that he had to leave the property, and that he should leave his mother alone. In response, Williams pulled out a gun and shot Daron in the chest. Daron fell into the house and died at his mother's feet. By all accounts, Daron was a very good kid who died protecting his mother and his home. Cincinnati, OH: On July 13, Douglas Harris was involved in an altercation with his wife, Stefanie Harris. The altercation escalated to the point that Mr. Harris shot his wife and threw her from the second floor balcony. Following this, Mr. Harris held responding officers at bay before shooting and killing himself. Harrisburg, PA: Raphael Rivera, 14, was in the immediate area of an altercation involving several individuals. When the altercation escalated into gunfire, the victim, who was not involved in the argument, sustained a fatal wound to the chest. Two persons were arrested in connection with the incident. North Providence, RI: On the evening of July 31, police received calls of possible shots fired in the area of 103 Homewood Avenue. When the police arrived they observed Salvatore Puleo, 53, sitting on a stone wall adjacent to his property, bleeding from facial wounds from a firearm and in shock. In a vehicle still running in his driveway was his female friend, Laura Vincent, 38, dead from several bullet wounds to her head. Ms. Vincent's ex-boyfriend, Steven Marfeo, 44, of Johnston became an immediate suspect. The next morning his car was located in a secluded area some three-and-one-half hours from North Providence. In it was Mr. Marfeo's body with what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a suicide note stating that he was responsible for the shooting of Mr. Puleo and Ms. Vincent due to jealousy and rage. Knoxville, TN: Ernest Jones, a contract worker from Texas, was shot and killed with a .45 caliber weapon; the shooting was execution style and the victim was robbed. Mr. Jones, who had arrived in Knoxville just a few hours prior to his death, leaves a family. Fort Worth, TX: Fred Garza, a clerk at a convenience store, was shot and killed during a robbery. Garza was married and had a 22-year-old son. The suspects were arrested and charged with capital murder. San Antonio, TX: On July 8, Margie Villarreal made a 911 call to police to report a disturbance at her apartment. When they arrived, the officers found Villarreal shot dead inside the apartment with one bullet wound to the head. Villarreal's two children apparently witnessed the homicide, and her four-year-old daughter gave police the suspect's name. The suspect, who turned out to be Villarreal's ex-boyfriend, was located within the hour at his home. There he held his current girlfriend and her two children hostage for 10 hours. After finally releasing them, and with SWAT members entering the home, the suspect committed suicide with one shot to the head. A videotape later discovered in the suspect's possession revealed that he had planned Villarreal's demise weeks before. Norfolk, VA: On June 9, the victim was working in his own automotive shop when he was shot to death by an unknown person. Superior WI: Carl Peterson's son was a member of a gang involved in drug distribution in the community. Mr. Peterson had been attempting to confront his son and his friends in the hope of helping them change their behavior and actions. This gang, including the son, conspired to kill Mr. Peterson for financial gain; they shot and killed him on July 3. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of three persons, including the son. The shooter, who was behind Tyler and Gilmore when he fired at them, ran from the scene. Witnesses have refused to cooperate with the investigation, and no arrest has been made. I what would like to clear the air on this bryan was a dear friend to me and i was at the party actually it was my party , that is correct there has been know arrests made since the 1 eye witness that testified i guess his word was not good enough because of his past so the suspect they had they had that fled the state and also on americas most wanted ,they extridted him back to michigan is now free and clear of all charges .. so i guess my question is if he was innocent why did he flee the state ? we did cooperate with the police and tried to help as much as we could but when you didnt see who did it how can you say who did .. ? my poor friend and his family have to live knowing someone killed there son and know one is paying the price for that i would do anything to get the fool behind bars that ruined alot of peoples lives . I had to tell the true story EVERYONE cooperated with the investagtion maybe the police should have worked harder on the case i am sure it would not say that in a newspaper article.. I love you bryan r.i.p by my friend !!!
